Ngaruawahia to Hamilton
Ngaruawahia is the beginning of your journey! You’ll start opposite the significant Turangawaewae marae, home of the Maori King and wind your way along the mighty Waikato River for most of the way to Hamilton!

The Point to Perry Bridge

 

Distance: 5km
Difficulty: Grade 1

Highlights: Hakarimata Steps (all 1300 of them!), River views, picnic spots, Perry Bridge, Durham Precinct (for coffee and bites!) in Ngaruawahia

Notes: Concrete and 3m wide all the way!

Perry Bridge to Horotiu

Distance: 2.5km
Difficulty: Grade 1-2

Highlights: River views and picnic area just before Horotiu Bridge

Notes: Concrete and 3m wide most of the way – just a short bridge crossing over the old Horotiu Bridge

Horotiu to St Andrews Golf Course

Distance: 10km
Difficulty: Grade 1-2

Highlights: Historic fortified Mangaharakeke Pa site, Perry Bike Skills Park (detour in place) and Service Centre, Coffee Club Coffee. River views, picnic stops, look out for events at the Equestrian Centre at Pukete, Pukete MTB Park just off the path, St Andrews Golf Club

Notes: A short on road section about half way along – but on a very quiet road! To avoid a very steep section off Pukete Rd, continue along Pukete Road to Totara Drive. This avoids a very steep descent!

Access/Parking: Multiple access points along Pukete Rd, Totara Dr, St Andrews Road

St Andrews Golf Club to Hamilton Gardens

Distance: 8.5km
Difficulty: Grade 2-3

Highlights: Riverside all the way! Loads of places to stop for a break and snap right on the river, you may see rowers training on the river, Hamilton CBD with plenty of snack options, Ferry Bank art, world-class Hamilton Gardens

Notes: The path narrows through the CBD and is a LOT busier! Look out for heaps more people and you know the drill, be nice
